The General Wine Bar & Kitchen

After a couple of visits recently, I’ve finally sat down to write about the experience we have (thoroughly) enjoyed at The General Wine Bar and Kitchen in Mclaren Flat!

A much welcomed new watering hole and restaurant in its own right.

As soon as you walk into the General you get a sense for the passionate and friendly energy in the place. Good ol’ country hospitality, without lacking the modern style that gets you excited to settle in and explore.

We sat down for lunch, bubs in-tow, and got chatting with the lovely staff about the menu for the day. It was decided; we would have it all!

Starting (of course) with a couple of bevvies; locally made Goodiesons craft beer and a glass of Mr Riggs Rose, we received our first taste of the General’s food offerings.

House-made bread and butter. How every good meal should start in my humble opinion!

It might be a simple thing, but it was delicious and set the tone for the rest of our meal.

Our first course was a beef tartare, served with picked vegetables, a cauliflower cream and fresh herbs. BOOM; the flavours really packed a punch and just wowed from start to finish. We cleaned the plates to the point where you would wonder if there was even food served on them in the first place!

“Intercourse” (no, that’s not a typo!) was roasted heirloom carrots served on a bed of chickpeas, with jus, herbs, and a salanova cream sauce. Hellooooo carrot heaven! So incredibly tasty; it was seriously perfect.

The main was the crispiest pan-fried whiting, served with pickled zucchini, elk salad, salsa verde and a side of roasted chat potatoes. The fish was so obviously fresh, and the pickled veg and salsa gave it a real zing to taste. The potatoes were beyond amazing, and the crunchiest I think I’ve ever had, whilst still being super soft and fluffy on the inside.

We opted for desert (of course) and shared a Dark Chocolate tart, served with a cherry ice cream. Dark chocolate and cherry are a match made in heaven, and this was the perfect ending to a truly delectable dining experience.

The General is also home and cellar door for Mr Riggs wine and Zonte’s Footstep wines.

Not hungry enough for a full-blown lunch? That’s okay; you can take in a wine flight experience, with small plates matched with the wines. Award winning wines and some tasty tapas? Don’t mind if we do!

You will love the styling of The General (*see the pre-opening story on the General) almost as much as you love the people….

If you haven’t yet been, do yourself a favour and make a visit today!

Cheers!
